I stopped using Tutanota as my daily email because of their terrible search features

5.0 2 years ago

Comments: I used Tutanota as my daily email provider for one year. Once the excitement of leaving Gmail wore off, I settled for what felt like a dial-up connection with little to no features. I am happy I left, but I am also pleased Tutanota has diehard fans because I trust they will continuously improve and will someday be a service I will happily return to.

Pros:

Tuta is secure, the company behind them is solid, and the online Privacy nuts give them a thumbs up. If you're looking for an encrypted email provider, that values their users and makes that clear in their privacy policy, then Tutanota is worth looking into. I like that they have a small free email account, which you can use to test. I did this for a while until I felt confident I could use them. The best part about Tutanota is their price. I would say they are a very affordable solution and offer enough features to make you feel like you're really getting something beyond secure email for your money spent.

Cons:

The two things I could not stand from Tutanota were how slow their app is and how terrible the search is. The search limitation is partially due to how encryption works, so to some extent, I understand why they want to provide a search feature without constantly scanning through all your emails. But then again, Prontonmail figured a way to do it, so I don't see what is missing. While I still have a Tutanota account, I rarely use it simply because I am much happier with other services. Tuta also has applications for all devices and can be used via a browser. All of them are slow to use. So this slowness made me want to use it less and less.

Thanks for rating our encrypted email service, we are happy that you like the level of security and privacy you get with Tutanota. Please note that the search feature works much smoother in our mobile and desktop apps; search in the browser does not work as well due to limitations of the browsers. We hope you understand!

Perfect for medical practice

5.0 6 months ago

Pros:

We've used Tutanota for more than two years. During this time, Tutanota was always available and accessible quickly from desktop as well as mobile. We use it to communicate confidentially with our patients (end-to-end encrypted). We have set up a shared mailbox which lets multiple employees access the entire communication history with our patients. This makes our day-to-day work very convenient.

Cons:

In general, the search feature works pretty well in Tutanota, but it lacks support for partial words. This is definitely something that needs improving so that you also find what you are looking for when you don't remember the full email address or have a typo in your search query.

Offers great email features but UX is wanting

4.0 2 years ago

Comments: Tutanota mail gives me lots of reasons to believe my privacy is near 100% guaranteed. Every feature has high level of security around it. I like it.

Pros:

I have been on a search for more privacy for emails and have tried several email service providers for some time. Tutanota has been a hard one to even want to test because of the unappealing user interface. I cannot pin down exactly what i don’t like; it is probably the background color but also not very intuitive overall UI. It could zero down to personal preference. Much of my use for emails is for feedback sensitive feedback communications where I mostly use contact forms. This is where Tutanota mail supersedes the others. It offers secure encrypted contact forms which have boosted confidence with my contacts. On the forms page, I have been able to easily adapt the forms to notify users that the forms are encrypted. Of most importance is that users are able to put a password in the form and choose to remain anonymous.

Cons:

So far my personal problem with Tutanota is UI/X. Still not very easy to use and feels old. I am taking long to get used to it. I hope future updates will address this. But all said, functionality precedes looks on this one

Import feature was sorely missed when I used Tutanota

5.0 3 years ago

Comments: Love the features, love the proactive customer supoort, love the pricing. Tutanota would likely have retained me if a robust email import tool had been present at the time.

Pros:

I liked that Tutanota has implemented a search feature that uses the local client to decrypt messages and search for keywords in the email body. This means that your email stays zero-knowledge encrypted, yet, you can search through old emails. This is a feature even the bigger fish Protonmail has not been able to implement yet. The pricing was quite reasonable as well.

Cons:

The only, and I mean only, reason I moved away to Protonmail was the email import feature. I was moving from a private server and needed access to old emails. This was a deal breaker for me and i had to choose Protonmail. Else, I would wholeheartedly recommend Tutanota.
